Hand-painted white and yellow teapot Limoges box on sale

A hand-painted Limoges box is a small luxury, but that does not mean you always have to pay full price. Real Limoges boxes do go on sale. The trick is knowing where to look and how to tell a true bargain from a box that is cheap for the wrong reason.

Why Authentic Limoges Boxes Go on Sale

A markdown on a real Limoges box usually has a simple reason:

  • Overstock: we ordered more of a design than we need.
  • Retired designs: the workshop stops making a design, and we clear the pieces we have.
  • Seasonal pieces: holiday boxes are sometimes marked down after their season.
  • Making room: new arrivals need shelf space.

None of these change the porcelain. A sale box is shaped, fired and hand-painted in Limoges, France, just like a full-price one.

How to Tell a Real Bargain From a Fake

Very cheap "Limoges" boxes on auction and marketplace sites are not always what they claim. Before you buy anywhere, check:

  1. The bottom mark. Authentic pieces are marked "Limoges France". Look for Peint main (painted by hand) or Rehaussé main (finished by hand).
  2. The hinge. Most real Limoges boxes have a small metal hinge and clasp, neatly fitted and opening smoothly.
  3. The painting. Hand-painted detail has tiny, natural brush variations. Blurry or pixelated decoration is a warning sign.
  4. The seller. A shop that sells Limoges every day, shows clear photos and includes a certificate of authenticity is a safer bet than an anonymous listing.

Every box we sell is authentic and comes with a certificate of authenticity. Read more in What Is a Limoges Box?

When to Buy

  • Buy last-one pieces right away. Our Last One Left collection shows designs where only one is in stock.
  • Look for retired designs. See Retired and Rare Limoges Boxes for pieces the workshops no longer make.
  • Shop holiday designs early. Christmas and winter boxes sell out first every year.
  • Check back often. New markdowns are added as stock changes.

Understand What You Are Paying For

Why does one box cost $129 and another $489? Size, shape, how much is painted by hand, removable pieces inside and the number of hinges all play a part. Our Limoges Box Price Guide explains it simply.
